Located in Northeast Ohio on the eastern border of the historic Connecticut Western Reserve, Western Reserve America represents the coming together of a group of citizens concerned about the shift in American values. We believe America was built on the pillars of Freedom, Personal Responsibility, and Common Sense. All three have been lost in contemporary American society.
While there are many contributing factors to this shift in values, we believe the root cause is a foundational failure of our education system to teach the importance of self reliance and common sense in modern society as well as the need for the freedom to fail and/or succeed in our individual endeavors. We also believe that our educational institutions have developed an attitude that the Constitution has become an anachronism that needs to be circumvented rather than protected in the pursuit of the ideologically based concept of “social justice.”
The result has been a self perpetuating and growing predominance of one political philosophy prevalent in our educational institutions from our elementary schools through university graduate schools. Specifically in our institutions of higher education, liberal political thought is pervasive in the fields of liberal arts, education and journalism. It is reinforced by a system of tenure that rewards those whose political views reflect those making the tenure decisions. The result is 72% of those teaching in American universities consider themselves to be liberal while only 15% consider themselves to be conservative. In addition, 50% of faculty members consider themselves to be Democrats and only 11% consider themselves to be Republican. (College Faculties a Most Liberal Lot by Howard Kurtz; Washington Post; March 29, 2005).
The goal of Western Reserve America is to re-introduce balance into the American education system through the following:
1) Providing scholarships directed to those university students who demonstrate a belief in the core principles of Freedom, Responsibility and Common Sense and are entering into the fields of Education or Journalism.
2) Working with institutions of higher learning, especially those funded with taxpayer dollars, to achieve faculty diversity and ideological balance as part of their educational culture.
3) Establishing an endowed chair at a major university for the purpose of developing Center for Constitutional Studies relating specifically to promoting the concepts of Freedom, Personal Responsibility and Common Sense within America’s educational system.
4) Outreach into secondary school faculties offering supplemental curriculum and in-service workshops on integrating the concepts of personal initiative and personal responsibility into daily course work.
Western Reserve America has applied for 501-C-3 status allowing it to seek tax deductible charitable contributions. Its Board of Directors has wide experience in the fields of Law, Education, Business, Military Service and Accounting.
Western Reserve America is aware that America did not get into this pickle overnight, and it will take a long time to achieve the stated goals. But with hard work and perseverance, Western Reserve America hopes to make a difference.
